Things might look a little different around here

After two years of staying in touch about Out of Hours through Mailchimp, our podcast, events and various musings, we have joined Substack. This is part of a couple of changes, which I wanted to write to you about below.

Firstly I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has joined us on the Out of Hours journey so far. These thank-you’s always feel meaningless at scale, but I really mean it. Whether you’ve reviewed the podcast, joined an event, or followed the Instagram, I see you and I appreciate you!

What’s changed?

Out of Hours was set up two years ago to support people with passion projects. We wanted more people to follow the life they actually want to live, to start forgotten passions and live a more fulfilled and intentional life - through trusting themselves on what they want from life and working on their own projects, out of hours.

When I started Out of Hours, the landscape was very different to today (what a difference two years make!). No-one had heard of ‘The Passion Economy’, people weren’t really talking about how easy it was to be a ‘creator’, and the value of having side projects (as defined against side hustles) was still quite poorly understood in the mainstream - at least in my world and many others’.

Now, two years later, the environment has changed. There are tools which help anyone build anything, the barriers are lower than ever before and there are communities on all platforms that enable you to connect with people who are working in a similar space.

So, what’s next?

We’ll be focusing more on doing fewer things well, at scale: sharing the inspiration and information you need to use your hours well, and tips to stay sane and happy if you decide to start a passion. We’ll do this via:

Our Substack newsletter (hello!)

Our Podcast (season 3 out in 2022)

We’ll still be sharing weekly inspiration and thoughts via our Instagram, so if you want to fill your feed with a bit more joy, connect with us on there too.

Whilst tools have democratised access to starting your own thing, the ability to stay the course, without self doubt, inconsistency and poor time management getting in the way, is no easier. We need to learn from the science, and from those who have built meaningful projects - to make sure that no great ideas are lost. We need to learn mental models and give ourselves permission to start.

I’ve moved to Substack, as it allows more space for longform writing and discussion of topics, which is more useful than soundbites. It’ll stay brief, but in this newsletter, it’ll be more focused on the lessons I’ve learnt personally, the research and the science behind creativity and entrepreneurship, and the hard-won life experience shared from people who have built their own projects and grown them into something much bigger than they ever expected.

Feel free to unsubscribe if this isn’t your thing, or share it with someone who is trying to use their hours on this planet well.

Otherwise, see you in a couple of weeks :)
