New episode: Prison Yoga Project
Why yoga can help with impulse control, the power of trauma-informed yoga and the male role belief system
Hey everyone!
Hope you’re doing well. Firstly, thank you SO much to those of you who have bought me a coffee to support the podcast - it means the world. 🌟 Thank you for those generous 3 anonymous people, and to Ellen! ☕️
I wanted to share the new Out of Hours episode is out - this week with James Fox, the founder of Prison Yoga Project. You can listen on Spotify, Apple, Fountain or any player.
I trained as a yoga teacher last year - not because I believe it’s a good workout, or way to be flexible, but because I think it is an amazing guide to life and breathing that can help many people.
James wanted to bring yoga to the people who needed it most - and twenty years ago he set up Prison Yoga Project - a programme to teach trauma informed yoga and bring yoga and mindfulness to prisons.
70% of prisoners eventually return to the community. But there is a 76% re-arrest rate within the first 5 years. Prison Yoga Project supports incarcerated people with trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness - to help reduce reoffending and providing a more humane experience for incarcerated people.
James also has written a book about yoga and sent thousands of copies to prisoners who have requested them (If you’re interested in supporting Prison Yoga Project - they run a book program, which supplies a free book to any inmate who requests one.)
In this episode, we talk about the male role complex, how trauma is stored in the body, what it’s like to teach yoga in a prison, and why everyone should support yoga in prison if they want a safer and more humane society.
