Hey everyone,
Like many others, I’ve taken some time to process a lot of the information about the war in Ukraine. Andrey Kurkov wrote in The Guardian “I have run out of words for the horror of Putin’s crimes in Ukraine”, and it feels difficult to put into words the sadness and horror taking place in Ukraine that we are hearing about on the news. My thoughts are with everyone who has already been affected.
If you haven’t donated already, this list from Charity Watch and this list from Global Citizen covers a few of the top rated charities both supporting those in Ukraine and those who have fled.
Choose Love, a charity which started as a side project for Josie Naughton (discussed in the Social Founder podcast) has launched a Ukraine appeal. They will support projects providing vital aid and services to those still in and fleeing the country, including: emergency medical care, food, shelter, clothes, legal support, support for the LGBTQIA+ community and mental health support.
You can also support Choose Love through supporting other independent brands:
Earl of East, who started as a side project, are giving all profits from its sunflower candle to Choose Love, detailed on their Instagram.
Deliciously Ella (which also started as a side project) will be donating all net proceeds from its online shop to Choose Love.
If you’re looking to donate to a small grassroots initiative - a friend of a friend is leaving on Tuesday to deliver sleeping bags and warm clothes from London. They are looking to raise £2,000 to buy items and deliver to the Polish border.
Restaurants are also taking part in Cook For Ukraine where they add a donation to the bill. And you too can join the movement by hosting your own #CookForUkraine supper club or bake sale. You can cook, invite your friends and suggest a donation to this Just Giving page. (All proceeds are directed to UNICEF UK’s Ukraine appeal, supporting children and families).
Authors, including Tim Ferris and Ryan Holiday, are donating 100% of past book royalties from Russia + Ukraine to Ukrainian causes.
If you are doing - or have seen - any projects to support Ukraine, please do write to me and let me know.
I hope you have a restful week ahead,
Georgia
